In October 2012, with generous contributions from friends and their friends far and near, donations of books to the library and donation of meals for 3 days for nearly 1,000 inpatients at the Yangon Mental Health Hospital became possible.
During the same trip, Nwe delivered a training programme for the junior psychiatrists at the YMHH. Presentations were contributed by Burmese and non-Burmese senior colleagues, sharing the current practices in the UK. The programme was run over 2 days and attended not only by the main targeted group of first and second year postgraduate students (who work either in the government mental hospitals or in the military medical corp) but also by post-MMedSc level registrars and a few consultant psychiatrists. The total number was around 40. Local Pharmaceutical import companies provided refreshment and teaching materials.
Nwe presented a poster based on this rewarding expereince at the "Global Mental Health matters: The world in denial?" Conference in London in March 2013. Please see the poster below.
Such support and collaboration from both ends strengthened Nwe's enthusiasm and determination to set up "Mind to Mind Myanmar" to continue working on the mental health needs of people in Myanmar/ Burma.
NB: For ethical reasons, no photographs with patients or of the scenes with patients in the background were taken at the YMHH.
